Once upon a time, the term Rasquache was used to degrade or diminsh the worth of something or someone. To be rasquache was to be socially low or invaluable. But, with the rise of the Chicano art movement in the mid 60's and early 70's came a distinctly Chicano style that was defined by a unique sensibility of repurpose, re-use and ingenuity. The word Rasquache was reinvented and took on the meaning expressed by Amalia Mesa-Bains.
